GTA 5 System Requirements | Enhanced & Legacy PC Specs
To run GTA 5 Enhanced, your PC must have at least an Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590 processor, 8GB of system RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1630 or Radeon RX 6400 graphics card with 4GB of VRAM. You also need 105GB of free space on an SSD. An SSD is required, not optional. These are entry-level requirements only. Rockstar does not state which resolution, graphics preset, or frame rate this hardware is expected to deliver.
Players with older PCs can install GTA 5 Legacy instead. Its minimum requirements drop to a Core 2 Quad Q6600 or Phenom 9850 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a GeForce 9800 GT or Radeon HD 4870 graphics card. It also supports installation on a 125GB HDD, but it does not include the newer graphics features found in Enhanced. For better performance in GTA 5 Enhanced, Rockstar recommends 16GB of dual-channel RAM, an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT with 8GB of VRAM, and a DirectStorage-compatible drive. These specifications are taken from Rockstar’s official GTA 5 PC system requirements.
GTA 5 System Requirements at a Glance
GTA 5 has two separate sets of PC requirements because the Enhanced and Legacy editions are built for different hardware levels. Check the edition you plan to install before comparing your processor, graphics card, memory, or storage with the specifications below.

A PC must meet every minimum requirement for the selected edition. Having 16GB of RAM, for example, does not make the system suitable for GTA 5 Enhanced if the graphics card is below the minimum or the game is installed on an HDD. You must check the processor, graphics card, memory, operating system, and storage separately.
The storage figures also require careful reading. Enhanced needs 20GB less listed capacity than Legacy, but it must be installed on an SSD. Legacy requires more space, yet Rockstar still allows an HDD. This means a PC can have enough free storage for Enhanced and still fail the storage requirement because the available space is on the wrong type of drive.
The recommended specifications provide more performance headroom than the minimum specifications, but Rockstar does not connect them to a stated resolution, graphics preset, or frame-rate target. Treat them as reference configurations rather than guarantees of 60 FPS, maximum settings, or ray-traced gameplay.
Which Version Should You Install?

Install GTA 5 Enhanced if your PC meets every minimum requirement and you want the newer graphics and storage features. Choose GTA 5 Legacy if your system falls below the Enhanced requirements or only has an HDD. Legacy is not a lower graphics preset inside Enhanced; it is a separate version with its own installation, hardware requirements, and GTA Online environment.
What GTA 5 Enhanced Adds
GTA 5 Enhanced improves lighting, shadows, reflections, image reconstruction, and loading. Its ray-tracing options include ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows, and reflections. Ray tracing calculates how light interacts with objects in the scene, which can produce more natural lighting and reflections. These calculations place far more work on the graphics card than the traditional effects used by Legacy.
Enhanced also supports DLSS and FSR upscaling. Upscaling renders the game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs the image at the selected output resolution. This can reduce GPU load and improve performance, although image quality depends on the selected mode and output resolution.
Frame generation performs a different task. It creates additional frames between traditionally rendered frames to make motion appear smoother. It does not remove the need for a suitable CPU, GPU, or stable base frame rate. It can also add visual artifacts or input delay under some conditions. Rockstar added FSR and DLSS frame-generation support to GTA 5 Enhanced in the August 2025 title update.
The SSD requirement is another important difference. Enhanced must be installed on an SSD, while its recommended specification calls for a DirectStorage-compatible drive. Faster storage helps the game load data more efficiently, but it cannot compensate for a processor or graphics card that falls below the minimum requirement.
When GTA 5 Legacy Makes More Sense?
Legacy is the practical choice for PCs with older processors, graphics cards with 1GB or 2GB of VRAM, or systems that still use an HDD. It can also suit players who only need the original visual presentation and do not intend to use ray tracing, modern upscaling, or frame generation.
Choosing Legacy does involve trade-offs. It does not include the newer lighting and rendering features available in Enhanced, and its official installation requirement is larger at 125GB. Its lower hardware requirements also do not guarantee good performance on every old PC. A system that only matches the minimum specification may still struggle in busy areas or during demanding GTA Online sessions.
GTA Online players should confirm which edition their friends use before installing the game. Enhanced and Legacy players cannot join the same sessions. A GTA Online profile can be migrated from Legacy to Enhanced, but progress made after migration does not remain synchronized between the two versions. Rockstar explains this limitation in its PC profile migration instructions.
What the GTA 5 Specifications Mean?
A system-requirements table shows which components Rockstar considers suitable for the game, but it does not explain how each component affects performance. The processor, graphics card, RAM, and storage perform different tasks. A weakness in one component cannot always be corrected by having a stronger component elsewhere.
CPU Requirements
The CPU, or processor, handles game logic that is not rendered directly by the graphics card. In GTA 5, this work includes traffic behaviour, pedestrians, physics, object movement, and many calculations running in the background. A weak processor can cause inconsistent frame delivery even when the graphics card is capable of producing a high average frame rate.
GTA 5 Enhanced lists the Intel Core i7-4770 and AMD FX-9590 as its minimum processors. Its recommended processors are the Intel Core i5-9600K and AMD Ryzen 5 3600. The recommended Intel processor has an i5 label, but that does not make it weaker than the older i7 listed as the minimum. The i5-9600K belongs to a newer processor generation and benefits from architectural improvements, higher per-core performance, and a different core configuration.
This distinction matters when comparing any two processors. The Core i3, i5, i7, and i9 labels describe a product’s position within its own generation. They should not be used to compare processors released several generations apart. The full model name is required because an old Core i7 may perform below a newer Core i5.
Processor limits are often visible through unstable frame times rather than a completely unplayable game. The frame rate may look acceptable in a quiet area but fall when driving quickly through the city or entering a crowded GTA Online session. This is why matching the minimum CPU does not guarantee consistent performance in every location.
GPU and VRAM Requirements
The GPU, or graphics card, renders the image displayed on the screen. It handles geometry, textures, lighting, shadows, reflections, post-processing effects, and ray tracing. Increasing the resolution or graphics quality gives the GPU more work to complete for every frame.
GTA 5 Enhanced requires at least a GeForce GTX 1630 or Radeon RX 6400 with 4GB of VRAM. Rockstar recommends a GeForce RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 6600 XT with 8GB of VRAM. These requirements cover both GPU processing power and the amount of dedicated video memory available to the card.
VRAM is memory located on the graphics card. It stores data the GPU needs for rendering, including textures, shadow information, frame buffers, and parts of the scene. It is different from system RAM. A PC with 16GB of system RAM does not meet an 8GB VRAM recommendation if its graphics card only contains 4GB of dedicated memory.
Higher resolutions and graphics settings can increase VRAM use. Ray-traced reflections, high-resolution shadows, and detailed textures may also need more video memory. When the selected settings exceed the available VRAM, the game may have to move data between system memory and the graphics card more frequently. This can cause stutter, delayed texture loading, or sudden performance drops.
The GPU model remains important even when two cards contain the same amount of VRAM. An older 8GB graphics card is not automatically equal to the RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT because memory capacity does not measure rendering speed, architecture, or feature support.
RAM Requirements
System RAM holds data that the game, Windows, the launcher, and background programs need to access quickly. GTA 5 Enhanced requires 8GB of RAM and recommends 16GB. Legacy requires 4GB at minimum and recommends 8GB.
An 8GB PC may meet the Enhanced minimum, but the game cannot use all 8GB by itself. Windows and background programs also occupy part of that memory. A browser, voice-chat application, recording tool, or game launcher can leave less RAM available for GTA 5. When physical memory becomes full, Windows may move some data to the storage drive, which is much slower than RAM and can contribute to stutter.
Rockstar specifies a dual-channel configuration for the recommended 16GB setup. Dual-channel memory allows the processor to communicate with RAM through two memory channels instead of one. This increases memory bandwidth when the modules and motherboard are configured correctly. A common desktop arrangement is two matching 8GB modules rather than one 16GB module.
Capacity and channel configuration solve different problems. Moving from 8GB to 16GB gives the system more working memory, while dual-channel operation increases the rate at which data can move between the memory and processor. Both can help frame consistency, but neither can compensate for a graphics card or processor below the minimum requirement.
SSD and DirectStorage Requirements
GTA 5 Enhanced must be installed on an SSD with at least 105GB of available space. Rockstar’s recommended specification calls for a DirectStorage-compatible drive. Legacy can be installed on an HDD, although it requires 125GB of available space.
An SSD reads and writes data much faster than a mechanical HDD because it has no moving parts. This helps reduce loading times and allows game data to be accessed more quickly while moving through the map. Installing Enhanced on a large HDD does not satisfy the requirement, even if the drive has more than 105GB of free space.
DirectStorage is a Windows storage technology designed to move game data from a fast drive with less processor overhead. According to Microsoft’s Windows 11 hardware guidance, DirectStorage requires an NVMe SSD using the standard NVMe controller driver and a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support. A SATA SSD still satisfies Rockstar’s basic SSD requirement for Enhanced, but it may not provide the full DirectStorage configuration listed under the recommended specification.
DirectStorage should not be treated as a direct frame-rate upgrade. Its main purpose is to improve how game data is loaded and delivered. The visible benefit can depend on the game, drive, operating system, and the rest of the PC.
The listed storage capacity should also be treated as the starting requirement. Updates, temporary installation files, and launcher data may require additional room. Leaving only 105GB free before installing Enhanced creates a risk that the installation or a later update will run out of space.
Windows and Graphics Drivers
GTA 5 Enhanced requires Windows 10 build 1909 or later, while Rockstar recommends Windows 11. Legacy requires the 64-bit version of Windows 10. A computer running an older Windows version does not meet the current official requirements, even if its processor and graphics card are powerful enough.
Windows 10 can still run on a PC, but Microsoft ended its standard support on October 14, 2025. This means game compatibility and operating-system support are now separate issues. GTA 5 may run on a qualifying Windows 10 installation, but an unsupported Windows installation may no longer receive normal security fixes unless it is covered by an applicable extended-support option.
The DirectX 10 entry in Rockstar’s requirements refers to sound-card compatibility. It does not mean that every DirectX 10 graphics card can run GTA 5 Enhanced. The GPU must still match or exceed the listed GTX 1630 or RX 6400 requirement.
Graphics drivers provide the software connection between Windows, the game, and the GPU. Updated drivers can contain game profiles, performance improvements, and fixes for crashes or rendering problems. However, a new driver can occasionally introduce an issue on a particular system. If GTA 5 begins crashing immediately after a driver update, testing a previous stable driver can help identify whether the update caused the problem.
Can Your PC Run GTA 5?
You can check whether your PC meets the GTA 5 system requirements without installing a third-party hardware scanner. The important part is recording the complete name of each component. A label such as “Core i7” or “Radeon graphics” does not provide enough information because many processors and GPUs use those names.
Find Your Exact PC Specifications
Follow these steps to identify the hardware and software that affect GTA 5:
- Check your processor and system RAM. Open Settings, select System, and then open About. The Processor field shows the full CPU model, while Installed RAM shows the total amount of system memory. The same page also confirms whether Windows is using a 64-bit operating system.
- Check your Windows version and build. Press Windows + R, enter
winver, and press Enter. GTA 5 Enhanced requires Windows 10 build 1909 or later, while Windows 11 is recommended. - Identify your graphics card. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select Performance, and then choose GPU. Record the complete GPU name and the amount of Dedicated GPU memory. If the PC lists both GPU 0 and GPU 1, it may contain integrated graphics and a separate graphics card. Check both entries rather than assuming the first one is used for gaming.
- Confirm the amount of VRAM. In Task Manager, dedicated GPU memory is the figure that should be compared with Rockstar’s VRAM requirement. Shared GPU memory is borrowed from system RAM and should not be counted as dedicated VRAM. You can also press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, and check the Display tab for additional graphics information. - Check the drive type. Open Windows Search and enter Defragment and Optimize Drives. The Media type column identifies each drive as a solid-state drive or hard disk drive. GTA 5 Enhanced must be installed on an SSD, while Legacy can use an HDD.
- Check available storage. Open File Explorer and select This PC. Find the drive where GTA 5 will be installed and check its available space. The drive needs more than the listed game size because updates and temporary installation files can require additional capacity.
Write these details down before comparing the PC with the requirements table. This prevents similar component names from being confused during the comparison.
Compare the Correct Components
Start by choosing the edition you intend to install. GTA 5 Enhanced and Legacy have different requirements, so a PC should not be compared with a mixture of specifications from both versions.
Compare the CPU with the CPU requirement, the GPU with the GPU requirement, and system RAM with system RAM. Do not combine stronger and weaker parts into a general score. A PC with an RTX 3060 and only 4GB of system RAM does not meet the Enhanced minimum because the RAM is insufficient. A PC with 16GB of RAM and an HDD also fails the Enhanced storage requirement.
Use complete model names when comparing processors and graphics cards. An Intel Core i7-4770 is different from an Intel Core i7-7700, while a GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU is different from the desktop RTX 3060. The amount of memory alone is also insufficient for comparison. An older graphics card with 8GB of VRAM is not automatically equal to the recommended 8GB GPUs.
If your CPU or GPU is not one of the models named by Rockstar, compare its performance and supported features with the listed reference component. Use model-specific benchmark evidence rather than release year, product tier, VRAM capacity, or clock speed alone. Two components with similar names or specifications can perform differently because of architecture, power limits, and cooling.
Understand Your Compatibility Result
Use the weakest component to classify the PC. If one required component falls below the minimum, the entire system falls below the official requirement for that edition.

A PC that sits between the minimum and recommended specifications should not automatically be described as unsuitable. It meets the official entry requirement if every component reaches the minimum. However, its usable settings and frame rate still depend on which components are closer to the lower limit and how the game is configured.
GTA 5 Settings That Affect Performance
Lowering every graphics option is rarely the best way to improve GTA 5 performance. Some settings mainly affect the GPU, while others increase CPU work or VRAM use. Identify the limiting component first, and then change the settings connected to that component.
If the GPU or VRAM Is the Limit
A GPU limit occurs when the graphics card cannot render frames as quickly as the processor prepares them. Common signs include high GPU usage, a frame-rate increase after lowering the resolution, or large performance drops when ray tracing is enabled.
Start with the settings that create the greatest graphics workload:

Ray tracing should be tested separately from the main graphics preset. Enabling several ray-traced effects at once makes it difficult to identify which option caused the performance loss. Begin with ray tracing disabled, establish a stable baseline, and then enable one effect at a time.
Resolution controls how many pixels the GPU must produce for each frame. A 2560 × 1440 image contains about 78% more pixels than 1920 × 1080, while 3840 × 2160 contains four times as many pixels as 1920 × 1080. This is why the same graphics card can deliver very different performance at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K.
DLSS and FSR reduce the internal rendering resolution and reconstruct the image at the selected output resolution. Quality mode usually preserves more detail because it starts from a higher internal resolution. Balanced and Performance modes reduce GPU work further, but the lower internal resolution can make fine details less clear. Test image quality while the vehicle is moving because reconstruction artifacts may be less visible in a static screenshot.
Texture quality should not always be the first setting reduced. Textures mainly occupy VRAM and may have a smaller effect on average FPS while the graphics card has enough memory. Lowering texture quality becomes useful when the VRAM budget is exceeded, texture loading is delayed, or movement through the city causes repeated stutter.
Frame generation should not be used to hide poor underlying performance. It adds generated frames between normally rendered frames, but it does not make the CPU process game logic faster. Disable frame generation while diagnosing a performance problem. Once the base frame rate is stable, enable it and compare visual smoothness, input response, and image quality.
If the CPU or RAM Is the Limit
A CPU limit appears when the processor cannot prepare frames quickly enough for the GPU. The graphics card may remain below full usage even though the game is not reaching the desired frame rate. Lowering the resolution may produce little improvement because the GPU was not the main restriction.
Population Density is one of the first settings to test in a CPU-limited situation. Increasing it adds more traffic and pedestrians for the processor to manage. The effect is more noticeable while driving through busy parts of Los Santos than in quiet rural areas.
Distance Scaling controls how far detailed objects are drawn. Extended Distance Scaling increases that workload further by keeping additional detail visible at longer distances. These options can affect both the CPU and GPU, but they are important to reduce when performance falls during fast movement through detailed areas.
Population Variety changes the range of vehicles and pedestrians used in the world. It may place additional pressure on memory because more asset types must remain available. Lower it when a system with limited RAM or VRAM stutters in populated areas, but test Population Density separately because the two settings do not perform the same function.
Background applications can increase CPU and memory pressure. Close unnecessary browser tabs, recording software, update services, and other programs before testing. Do not close security or system processes that you cannot identify. The purpose is to create a consistent test environment, not to disable essential Windows services.
An 8GB system can meet the Enhanced minimum but may have little memory left after Windows and the launcher take their share. If Task Manager shows memory use remaining close to full during play, reducing background activity can help. Moving to 16GB of dual-channel RAM provides more capacity and bandwidth, but it will not correct a processor that is already below the required performance level.
A stable frame-rate limit can improve consistency on a CPU-limited system. For example, a PC that repeatedly moves between 45 and 70 FPS may feel less consistent than the same PC running at a stable lower limit. The best cap depends on the frame rate the system can maintain during demanding scenes, not the highest figure reached in an empty area.
If the Game Stutters or Loads Slowly
Stutter is a brief interruption in frame delivery. It is different from a consistently low frame rate. A game running at 40 FPS may feel slow but steady, while a game averaging 60 FPS can still feel uneven if individual frames take much longer to appear.
Storage is the first requirement to confirm for GTA 5 Enhanced. The game must be installed on an SSD. Installing the launcher on an SSD while keeping the game files on an HDD does not satisfy this requirement. Check the location of the complete game installation.
VRAM pressure can cause stutter when the graphics card has to replace data frequently. Reduce texture quality, ray-tracing effects, resolution, or other memory-heavy settings if the in-game VRAM estimate approaches or exceeds the available capacity. Leave some memory available for Windows and other graphics processes rather than filling the displayed limit.
System RAM can create a similar problem. When physical memory becomes full, Windows may move data to the page file on the storage drive. This is slower than keeping the data in RAM. Closing unnecessary programs or upgrading from 8GB to 16GB can help when memory use is the cause.
Driver updates, game patches, or a first launch can also require shaders and cached data to be rebuilt. Some temporary stutter may occur during this process. Repeated stutter in the same locations after several runs is more likely to indicate a continuing hardware, settings, storage, or software problem.
Use the following process to test changes:
- Choose a repeatable test. Use the built-in benchmark or drive the same route under similar weather and traffic conditions.
- Disable frame generation. Measure the game’s normally rendered performance before adding generated frames.
- Change one setting group. Adjust ray tracing, resolution, population, or textures separately rather than changing the complete preset.
- Repeat the test. Compare average FPS, low-frame-rate behaviour, and visible stutter.
- Keep changes that solve the identified problem. Restore settings that reduce image quality without producing a measurable improvement.
- Check the software if settings do not help. Update or roll back the graphics driver, verify the game files, and confirm that the latest game patch is installed.
Network lag should not be confused with rendering stutter. Other players or vehicles jumping between positions, delayed interactions, and connection warnings usually point to a network problem. Low FPS and uneven camera movement are more likely to involve the PC’s hardware, settings, drivers, or game files.
Can Laptops and Integrated Graphics Run GTA 5?
A laptop can run GTA 5 if its exact processor, graphics hardware, RAM, and storage meet the requirements for the selected edition. The laptop’s brand or product family does not provide a reliable answer. Two laptops sold under the same series name can contain different GPUs, power limits, memory configurations, and cooling systems.
Integrated graphics require more caution. Rockstar lists dedicated NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards for both editions and warns that some mobile chipsets and integrated GPUs may be incompatible. An integrated GPU should therefore be assessed through model-specific testing rather than its reported memory alone.
Laptop GPU Differences
A laptop graphics card is designed to operate within the power and cooling limits of a portable computer. It may share a name with a desktop graphics card, but the two versions can have different specifications and performance.
For example, “GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU” should not be treated as another name for the desktop RTX 3060. The laptop version has its own power, memory, and thermal limits. Rockstar’s recommended RTX 3060 reference does not state that every laptop carrying an RTX 3060 name will produce the same result.
Power limits can also vary between laptops using the same GPU. One manufacturer may configure the graphics card for higher power and install a cooling system capable of maintaining it. Another laptop may use a lower power limit to reduce heat, noise, size, or battery consumption. The higher-power model can sustain faster performance even though both product pages list the same GPU name.
The processor follows a similar pattern. Laptop CPUs with suffixes such as U, H, HS, or HX are designed for different power ranges. A low-power Core i7 processor is not automatically faster in games than a higher-power Core i5 from another generation. Record the complete processor model before comparing it with Rockstar’s desktop references.
Use the following conditions when checking a laptop benchmark:
- The test should use the same CPU and GPU as the laptop being considered.
- The GPU power limit should be stated where possible.
- The RAM capacity and single-channel or dual-channel configuration should match.
- The resolution and graphics settings should be identical.
- The laptop should be connected to its charger and running in its intended performance mode.
- The cooling condition should be clear because thermal throttling can reduce sustained performance.
A gaming laptop normally reduces performance while running on battery power. Windows, the laptop firmware, and the manufacturer’s control software may all restrict CPU or GPU power to preserve battery life. Test GTA 5 while the laptop is connected to its original charger.
